I REFER to Put a stop to lane misuse (The Star, Jan 5). I cannot help but to agree with the writer’s statement.

The authorities hardly use the emergency lane and if there is an approaching ambulance or a fire truck, road users do give way. But I certainly dont agree that emergency lanes are only for the use of the authorities.

What happens if my car stalls in the slow/middle lane and I have to pull over? Where do I pull over to and with no man around to help me (and two kids in the car), please tell me what do I do?

The authorities should find a solution to this problem and not shrug off their responsibility. Go after drivers who use the emergency lanes to overtake.

In the case of people being killed in accidents where the car is parked on the emergency lane and another vehicle rams into them, charge the driver who drove recklessly on the emergency lane.

Install cameras at busy highways to record drivers who misuse the emergency lane. Book them and fine them heftily so it will teach them a lesson so that they will not misuse the lanes.

Also, our mindset must change for us to see any reduction in the number of accidents. The government can only educate the people, but if people do not change their mindset, more lives will be lost.

Slowing down at the scene of accidents, jumping queues, beating the red light, not using indicator lights when overtaking or turning left/right, waiting at yellow boxes; all these has to change.
