Current issues, feedback & complaints on public services in Malaysia
Dear Editor, I REFER to the letter ‘Bridge close to collapse’ published last Dec 5.
Kurnia Outdoor is the marketing agent for the bridge next to the Pizza Hut restaurant in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. We were also involved in its construction.
We appreciate Tan’s concern re garding the safety of the bridge. However, to say that the bridge is “close to collapse” is too extreme. Tan may be concerned because the bridge is not level.
A report from the civil engineer who designed the bridge, Ir Chu Kiun Heng, states that it was their intention to design the bridge to rise up from the bottom to control deflection (displace ment) of the whole structure.
The engineer states that he did not notice the following items that may indicate the bridge is in danger of collapse: serious deflec tion of the whole structure or any of the steel members, buckling of any steel members, cracks on the concrete floor or distortion of the connections or bolts.
We would be happy to conduct a joint inspection of the bridge with Tan and City Hall officers to allay any possible fear of collapse.
