Dear Editor, THE year 2007 ended on a sad note for me.

A friend from the US contacted me asking what I wanted for Christmas.
After informing him, he asked me about the best way to mail the items so that they arrived safely.

I suggested he either use a commercial courier or ordinary post.

The first is an expensive option and delivery charges could cost more than the gift itself.

My friend chose ordinary parcel post. He was confident that he wouldn’t have any problems on his end due to the high standards of the US Postal Ser vice.

When he asked about the Malaysian postal system, I as sured him that after being privatised and public-listed, Pos Malaysia was competitive as any commercial courier because it was now a major player.

I was forced to eat my words soon after my parcel arrived, minus the most expensive item inside, which was a new limited edition Nintendo DS handheld game console.

Everything else in the parcel was intact save for this much sought-after item.
The parcel’s tape had been tampered with as if someone had opened the parcel.

Despite being listed on the content sheet, the item had dis appeared, as did my confidence in Pos Malaysia.

I will not recommend using this form of delivery to my friends.
I am certain that many

readers will have their own horror stories concerning Pos Malaysia.
It is a sad state of affairs if we cannot trust our postal ser vice.
