I READ with disbelief about the newly announced but not very well-known rule that Malaysians in Australia have to travel to Canberra to have their passports renewed.

When the rest of the world is progressing towards a globalised economy, the Malaysian government maintains its track record in ensuring additional inconvenience for its citizens living abroad, particularly in matters relating to passport renewals.

What is the rationale and decision-making process behind this? Is it consistent with rules set for Malaysians living in the United States, for example? Are they forced to travel to Washington every time a passport renewal comes up?

Malaysian foreign missions need to help out Malaysians living abroad, not make their lives more difficult.
