THE Vision School in Kampung Jawa was not the only school that disqualified students who won in the cross-country race last weekend.

My son’s school – Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seksyen 4 in Kota Damansara – also did the same thing. The puzzling thing is that the teachers had actually seen the students come in wearing shorts, even before the start of the event.

Why had the teachers not pulled those students aside and asked them to change, if the ministry had issued the no-shorts rule?

I find it very difficult to understand how schools nowadays seem to act very hostile and detached even towards their own students. Gone were the days when children actually looked forward to going to school and participating in events and projects spearheaded by enthusiastic and caring teachers.

I hope that the ministry can clarify the dress code in non-religious schools.
