Current issues, feedback & complaints on public services in Malaysia
I HAD recently applied for a maid from a local maid agency which claims to be the No 1 maid agency in Klang. Little did I know that I was in for loads of trouble.
First, I was slapped with a fee of RM6,515, which they assured me was a bargain price. But the maid did not arrive on the date promised. The agency than suggested that I employ a temporary maid at RM25 a day.
The agency also pointed out that if the temporary maid ran away, I would be liable for extra payments.
The maid I requested for arrived but was far below my expectations. The agency promptly said that was the luck of the draw.
Can’t we, after paying all that money, expect some quality service?
What is the basic criteria used to select these maids? We are given outdated photos to choose from and most of the information given are also false!
How can we be expected to judge the maid from her appearance and trust her with our loved ones?
It is high time the Ministry of Home Affairs laid down proper criteria and viewed this matter seriously. The employers are always at the losing end. There must be rules and regulations to protect us from being exploited by the agencies and the maids.

I empathize with you. My daughter’s maids are not up to expectations either and sending them home and reapplying for new ones is an expensive affair. Unlike hiring locals where one has a face-to-face interview, depending on biodata and a picture which is posed under supervision of the foreign maid agency cannot give an accurate assessment of the maid’s suitability. We have learned that what the maid declare as her preference need not be true, as time will tell.
Actually there is a better way but employers may have to pay more for the service. Maid must speak into a videocam, walk and perhaps show some of her skills in a shot videoclip that can be viewed from YouTube or at the employement agency’s office.
I believe that we should try not to use maids, not so much that they are no good but more so to stop ourselves from developing a maid dependency syndrome. Many hosts do not know where things are kept at home after allowing maids to run the domestic affairs. And children tend to be ‘bossy’ when they are used to have maids picking up after them.

Dear all
I am sorry to intrude.
I was involved in procuring maids directly from source countries i.Thailand & Indonesia.
No use using the videocam as we are from Malaysia anyway and we no longer command respect or high regard overseas
The crux of the matter is that we are slowly losing our economic advantage as a nation for the past five years.
Maids are human beings who will leave their families and children for at least two years to care about other peoples’ families/children.
As such the compensation must FAR commensurate with their sacrifice but our currency is weakening and their cost of living back home is going up. At the moment most democratic countries cannot provide and maids are forced to go to singapore/arab countries.
I agree with the above opinion and we should teach our daughters how to cook and clean and cut down on tuition/piano lessons.

I have recently hired a maid direct from Indonesia by paying RM5000 mainly to llok after my 2 children. The maid told the agent over there that she can look after childeren well etc etc. But after coming here she is not good at all in looking after children. She doesn’t even know how to feed my baby. But she can do all the washing and cleaning. But my main important task is to look after my children as me and my husband are working, cleaning is not so important. I’m so frustrated. Since i took direct from Indon, I can’t get a replacement nor a refund. Some suggested to me to transfer her to some cleaning services and get some money back though not in full. Is this possible. Can someone help me. I’m so sad.

My maid is going back soon and her replacement is not here yet, contrary to my agent’s promise. So pening la! What to do?
Mr. Wan, don’t you think household chores should be shared by ALL living in the house and not just the fairer members of the family?

Dear Cuteycue, I had the exact same problem but not anymore. I recently transferred my maid to another personal employer who really needs a maid. I asked for 50% of my initial cost. Not many people knows this but you can actually transfer your maid legally to another person within the first year of the maid’s visa (some say within 6months). Pls check with imigration. You need to fill in Lampiran D.

the maid hiring and firing system should be revamped with these little agents getting better then 007.
just imagine you hire them, train them and end up with not only strain but also pain.
i agree witn you lim if only every member in the family could help a little…but then the famous malaysian word…BUSY…

I have an Indonesia maid available for transfer. She has been with me for 6 months. She is 37 years old from Java. Suitable for taking care of children above 4 years old. Able to do simple cooking. Good in housekeeping. I want to transfer her because she is not suitable for taking care of new born baby which is my main purpose for hiring a maid. Anyone interested can e-mail me at sam_moysfun@yahoo.com

hi all!
Our daily half day maid saras works Mon to fri fr 1-30 to 6pm for us.
But saras needs another p/day job too. she is m’sian of indian descent. Decent lady in her early 50’s. she wants to know where you live to see if she can get to yr location.
Saras is trustworthy, & she cleans, cooks, iron.
We’ve used her for 6mths. We actually use 2 of them; but the other lady can’t work mornings for anyone else. Saras wants Rgt 600 for 5 days morning work.
fyi I am not the middle man & not being paid any commission. We pay Rgt1300 /mth ourselves but because our place is quite large!! No kidding but prefer local to hassles of runaway maids, etc & like I say, TRUSTworthy is the key here!

Hi, all. Just like to share my bad experience with maid agency.
I hired a combodia maid from an agency and after 14 months of having enough of ” I don’t know and I forget “, i decided to terminate her and sent her back to the agent. The agent refused to send her back to Cambodia but requested us to allow her to continue to be registered under our name but work for other employer. We rejected the request and request the agent to immediately terminate her from our name since she is no longer with us.The agent promised to do so and we proceed to get another new maid from the very same agent. After 2 months , we were surprised to find out our “OLD” maid was still under our name and new maid application was not done at all. Even after our query, the agent still dragging on our new maid application and old maid termination until we gave them a deadline. If nothing been done, we would report direct to the putrajaya head office. Due to this , I have gone personally to Putrajaya twice to check on our record but record still show our name. Why ? Because the termination was done in Shah Alam and not Putrajaya. The two system was not on line. The agent is playing the game. Termination done in Shah Alam, new application done in Putrajaya. Anyway, i got cheated on that also. When I was in Putrajaya the second time to check on my new maid application, the agent claimed their have totally pulled out my maid application from Putrajaya and refiled in Shah Alam, thus no records to be found there. They cannot show prove on the Putrajaya submission. After all these ho-ha , the agent propose to make full refund to me and I accepted the refund. From all these , I have learned :
1. Never trust the agent to send your maid back to their country. Send the maid to the airport by yourself and do your own check out memo.
2. My Old maid is earning more than what I paid her from new employer. She is considered an experience maid thus is more expensive. So, any maid may just try to terminate themself from 1st employer and work for second new employer who will pay them more. So, 1st employer, back luck to you………..
