I BELIEVE “The sorry state of our local libraries” (The Star – Jan 29) can be rectified if librarians themselves are people who are passionate about reading and books, and are fully committed to promoting the reading habit, not people who are there just to earn a stipend.

I am sure the right people, given the necessary training in library science, management and public relations, can make a good job of making public libraries the preferred place for students and the general public.

These librarians can be given relevant exposure in countries with an efficient library system. For this, there’s no need to go far, just across the causeway.
