Current issues, feedback & complaints on public services in Malaysia
THE government has taken serious steps to ban firecrackers over the past few years. This year, the enforcement has been much better than in previous years. We have to acknowledge the combined effort by the Customs Department and the police force.
The public should be aware of the adverse effects of firecracker use.
There were a few cases of death caused by toxic fumes from firecrackers as reported in India. We should not wait until such incidents occur here.
Firecrackers are known to cause air and noise pollution. They can be extremely harmful to senior citizens, small children and those with respiratory health problems.
Explosions from firecrackers release fine toxic particles that can easily enter the lungs. This may be dangerous, especially for those suffering from illnesses.
The toxic smoke released can also be a serious health hazard, causing asthma attacks, allergies and respiratory illnesses. These effects are caused by the presence of toxic metals in firecrackers that are dangerous to humans and to the environment.
Certain metals like manganese, lead and sodium, can only exist in the human body in very small quantities. Inhaling this toxic smoke may contribute to a rise in their levels in the human body.
How do we prevent this from happening?
The government should lead by example. National celebrations should not include fireworks displays.
No approvals should be given to any party to display fireworks for any occasion.
Raids by the Customs Department and police have to be stepped up a few months before any festive season.
The usual routes of smuggling must be closely monitored. If there is no supply of fireworks, there will be nothing to sell.
