I AGREE with Datuk Peter Minos of Kuching that there are no grounds for demanding the prime minister step down (”Leave the decision to the PM” — NST, April 30).

The success or failure of any political party depends largely on the supreme council that makes policy decisions. Therefore, the poor showing in the March 8 general election should not be attributed to the party leadership or any single individual.

The nation has witnessed an unprecedented political upheaval, where not one but many major political parties suffered setbacks. All the parties are now burdened with the colossal task of rebuilding and strengthening their base.

Agreed that in a democracy, party members have the right to voice their opinions to bring about changes. But such changes should be to strengthen the party. Members must realise that political stability is vital for economic growth and for our very survival.

In voicing their rights, members should exercise greater care and wisdom and have the destiny of the nation at heart.

In Umno, the members should view the position of Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi from the perspective that he is not only their president but also the prime minister of all Malaysians.

Given the present political scenario, Abdullah is the best person to lead the nation. In the face of mounting challenges and political crisis, he has declared that he will not run away. That is the grit admired most in a leader.

His willingness to listen and his strategy to solve racial problems show that he is a moderate. That is the type of leader we need to lead a multi-racial nation. He enjoys the confidence, respect and support of most Malaysians.

He has all the attributes of an able statesman and is held in high esteem by the international community. Give him the opportunity he deserves to prove his capability.
