I REFER to the letters “Umno should move on” (NST, May 23), “Best wishes” and “He has forgotten his call to the party” (NST, May 23) and others.

Never before have I read so much about Malaysian politics and antics of politicians.

As a member of the younger generation, I am worried as to where these arguments would lead the country, although some veterans in politics claim that the country has seen and survived much worse politically.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad are highly respected Umno figures.

As a young Malaysian who looks up to them, I find it rather disconcerting that my loyalty is now split between the two in the wake of these public quarrels and clashes of opinion.

While some refer to Dr Mahathir as “Machiavellian”, let’s not forget the contributions he has made for Malaysia.

And then, let’s not forget Abdullah, the “burning candle”, whose integrity and honour are unquestioned and who stands by his principles.

There we have it — two different individuals. Due to these distinctions, they seem to have divided loyalty and left some of us in a state of confusion.

I hope the players in this post-election political drama will be able to resolve their differences speedily so that Abdullah and his government can get back to the business we elected them for — running the country.
