I AM disappointed with the decision made by International Court of Justice to award Singapore sovereignty over Pedra Branca. While Malaysia gets Middle Rocks, South Ledge would belong to the state in whose territorial waters it is located.

One of the factors that apparently clinched Singapore’s claim was a letter sent by the state secretary of Johor in 1953 to the Singapore government stating that the Johor government does not claim ownership of Pedra Branca.

This should serve as a lesson to Malaysia. In respect of the more than 100 islands, reefs, rocks and other marine features in our waters, Malaysia should assemble all available data on them, claim them and take control of them.
