REFERENCE
is made to the letter “Bad work experience in Australia” (July 17).

I worked in Australia from 1988 until my retirement in 2004. Initially there was this culture shock – things being done in a different way, as was the behaviour. But it is up to the individual to adapt to the Aussie way. Did Galileo 2 expect the Aussies to adjust to his ways?

I encountered racism and bullying in Australia, but it occurs in Europe too. In Johannesburg I encountered many who expressed open disgust for the whites. The point is, wherever one goes one will meet pockets of small-minded ignorant people, people who dislike you because of your colour, religion, race, etc.

There are countries too that practise positive discrimination and you cannot do a thing about it. At least in Australia you could take remedial measures. There were avenues open to you to seek redress (which you did) and that shows the Aussie government’s commitment to fair play.

These avenues open to “victims” should be held as examples for many other countries, especially in Asia. I was not and am not an Aussie citizen, but I enjoyed all my rights and never whinged about it.
