It
was expected with world price hikes that the price of rice would rise.

In Malaysia, rice in particular has risen dramatically. Take Basmati rice for example. At present a 1kg bag of Basmati rice (Pakistan in origin) costs over RM9. In Australia, where rice consumption is considerably less, the same bag of rice costs A$2.80 or about RM8.40.

It costs more to transport this rice to Australia and within the country and more to stock it on their supermarket shelves due to high retail rents and wages. Yet it is cheaper to buy in Australia.

Compare the average salary of an Australian and a Malaysian and rice is far more affordable in Australia. Why is this so?
