Current issues, feedback & complaints on public services in Malaysia
THE suggestion that “those over 55 should step aside” in the fight for top posts in Umno, as stated by Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad (NST, Oct 10), may not be very feasible.
The important qualities of leadership are not diminished by age. Older people have more experience, patience and knowledge, which are essential attributes of effective leadership.
Although the young are usually more energetic and enthusiastic, lack of experience and the inability to wait can induce them to make judgments that do not have a proper balance of heart and mind.
Such judgments then lead to catastrophic decisions.
That a leader, out of love and understanding, can do the right thing for himself, his people and his country, should always be the main criterion for leadership selection.
