Current issues, feedback & complaints on public services in Malaysia
IT just does not make any sense why a snatch-theft victim would not want to make a report of the incident she was involved in (“Police seek help
of snatch-theft victim”—NST, Nov 4) unless, and I hope I am wrong, she is an immigrant with an expired passport or work permit who has overstayed
in this country.
If this is the case, perhaps the police, with the cooperation of the Immigration Department and her country’s embassy, could offer her some kind of amnesty, whereby she would be able to make a report without fear of punishment for overstaying in M a l ay s i a . But if the victim is a fellow Malaysian, then I would say that she is being ungrateful and irresponsible. Her potential saviour, 17- year-old Mustaqim Minsawi, who gave chase to the snatch gang in the hope of retrieving her purse, is dead — he fell when the thieves kicked his motorcycle and hit his head on the road divider. Yet the snatch-theft victim has not done anything to help the police track down the thieves responsible for this death. The least she could do is to make a police report and pass on to the police whatever information she may have. Everyone, including the parents of Mustaqim, wants to see the culprits brought to justice. The still missing snatchtheft victim must do her part to make this possible.
