I AM sure some Malaysian Chinese would like MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to play a vital role in Malaysian politics.

However, with memories of the (video) scandal still lingering in so many minds, it is advisable for Chua to rebuild his political career by being a team player, toeing the party line and showing repentance publicly.

It is imperative that Chua shows that he has changed for the better. Of course this can only happen over time.

Yes, some party members had shown their support for him by electing him to the No 2 post. However, that does not mean that they are in favour of him being nominated as a minister. Perhaps the members may have wanted him to serve, repent and show to the public that he has, over time, become clean again before getting a ministerial portfolio.

I am sure MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat knows his deputy’s value and would like Chua to play a vital role in nation building. But Chua has to shed his stained image before taking any high profile job again.

Chua should acknowledge his lucky stars for being elected to the second highest position in the party. In most countries a politician involved in a scandal would be long condemned and put in cold storage. I am also sure Chua does not want to be shamed again in Parliament.

In the interest of the Chinese in particular, and the nation in general, Chua should toe the party line and start working on building the party and nation.

There is not much time before the next general election is called. I am sure by then Chua would have gained much more respect from the party and public for a high profile job.

So, stop bickering on minor matters that will split the party.
