I HAVE much respect for Tun Mohd Hanif Omar for his balanced views on the affairs of the nation and I am sure he has national unity and harmony uppermost in his mind (”Dating Malay presence in this country” — NST, Nov 19).

Of late, there have been public exchanges on the status of Bumiputeras. Our Constitution is clear on that, but some people have misrepresented certain aspects of it to further their own agendas.

It is good that grievances and dissatisfaction over matters of national interest are brought out in the open instead of being suppressed.

By all means, declare your beliefs, feelings and loyalties but articulate them in a mature, respectful and rational manner.

Trying to outgun each other with veiled threats, insinuations and insults will only serve to cloud the issues.

After 51 years of independence, Malaysians have become wise as to who are committed to nation-building. March 8 is proof of this.

There are those who feel that March 8 is a flash in the political pan. But I don’t think so.
