I REFER to your report “Drivers to be fined if passengers don’t belt up” (NST, Dec 3) concerning a RM300 fine for drivers if rear-seat passengers do not use seat belts.

While I applaud the move, I don’t understand why the government does not impose a strict law on child restraint seats in vehicles.

In Britain, there are strict laws about this: even children up to 12 must be restrained.

As for children up to 3, they must be in (preferably) rear-facing seats to prevent serious injury in accidents. Refer to the website www.childcarseats.org.uk/law/ index. htm.

So, with this new law, adult passengers will be strapped in their seats, but what about children?

Children could be seriously injured if they are not properly restrained but adults may only receive minor injuries because they are safely belted up.

I hope the government will look into implementing laws for young children to be restrained in car seats. Car seats can be pricey but a child’s life is priceless.
