AS decision day looms on the issue of PPSMI (teaching of Science and Mathematics in English), I can’t help having a premonition that all may not be well for the policy. This is my last appeal as a concerned citizen to those in authority.

It was in the mid-1970s that the medium of instruction was changed from English to Bahasa Malaysia in our schools and subsequently in our universities.

Now, 30 years down the road, we have a whole generation of young Malaysians, below the age of 45, who were taught mainly in Bahasa Malaysia throughout their schooling years. They occupy mid-level positions in their respective professions and careers. They are also the parents of school-going children. This group is certainly more competent and comfortable with Bahasa Malaysia than with English.

On the other hand, the earlier generation that was taught mainly in English is now either retired or at the tail-end of their professions and careers. Their children have most likely finished schooling, are in universities or have already graduated.

This English-educated generation is now in the minority. Many are taking it easy and enjoying their golden years. Many have passed away.

This is the last chance for them to exert whatever influence they have so they can leave behind the legacy of an English medium of instruction in our education system, albeit only for Science and Mathematics.

Those who are still in senior positions and wield power and influence must act bravely, even though they may not have the support of younger officials, or may lose their popularity.

Failing to act for what they believe is best for our future generations because of selfish reasons will bring ruin to our nation eventually. In another 10 years, this English-educated group will be reduced to non-significance. It will then be too late.

I also pray and hope that the younger Bahasa Malaysia-educated generation will not opt for what is comfortable and easy for themselves. If they have been disadvantaged, let them not pass it to their children. They should look and think globally and choose what is best for their children.

They have the numbers — they are in the majority. Those who are in position to act and decide must do so with vision and conscience.

If we make the wrong choice, the consequences will be dire and irreparable.

This is the last call. Save PPSMI.
