Current issues, feedback & complaints on public services in Malaysia
I THINK all maids should be given a day off. A day off a week is a universal practice.
However, they must stay in the house and not be allowed out of the premises.
If any authority insists that they be allowed out of the house and if the maid runs away or becomes pregnant, I suggest that the government make it a rule that this authority pays a sum of money, say RM30,000, as compensation to the employer for all the inconvenience caused.
Sunday should be a day when the maid is given counselling, social interaction or other help or support, by the employer. Some of these maids might have emotional problems as a result of being far away from home. Many of them are single mothers. They need help so that they can better serve the employer.
Give the maid a day off. But if she runs away, someone has to pay for it. Some maids might also run away with stolen items from the employers’ homes.
I wonder why the media and the police have not highlighted the problem of maids running away. What has happened to those maids who ran away?

I don’t think the government should be made to pay compensation but the agency that supplied the maid should. Maybe not monetary compensation, the agencies should be responsible to provide a replacement maid without any further charge throughout the duration of the contract. Fees to the agencies should be paid in equal monthly installments for the duration of the contract. Only then will the agencies work to provide good maids. But with so many people looking for maids, agencies can dictate terms, so in this case the government should introduce legislations to enforce these. Hopefully we will be able to solve these problems.
